Hastings, Florida Update

This report presents the results of a second air monitoring experiment area near South Woods Elementary School in Hastings, Florida. The school is located in an agricultural area adjacent to fields of Chinese cabbage. Thirty-nine samples were collected over the monitoring period, which started October 1 and ended December 6, 2007. Four pesticides were identified in the samples: the insecticides endosulfan and diazinon, the herbicide trifluralin, and the fungicide chlorothalonil. Two of these pesticides are neurotoxins, two are suspected carcinogens, and three are or will soon be banned in Europe. Of the samples collected, 56% contained three of the four pesticides, and 18% contained all four pesticides. The new data show that the drift problem in Hastings has not gone away and is actually more extensive than previously believed. Go to the download site.

Minnesota

Minnesota Drift This factsheet and map shows the frequency of detection of chlorothalonil at 11 sites in rural Minnesota where citizens tested in 2006 and 2007. Chlorothalonil, a fungicide used extensively on potatoes in the state, was detected in two thirds of the samples, and chlorpyrifos, PCNB, and pendimethalin were also detected in some samples. Lindsay, California Biomonitoring Study

This report presents the personal stories of residents of the town of Lindsay in Tulare County, California. PANNA and El Quinto Sol (a community group based in Lindsay) who were involved in a study involving sampling of both air and urine in July of 2006. Urine data showing that 91% of the people tested had levels of chlorpyrifos metabolites in their urine that were above the US average, and most of the women in the study had amounts above levels of concern. Monitoring was conducted to coincide with the peak summer use of chlorpyrifos as an insecticide on oranges for the control of lepidopterous pests and scale.

Hastings, Florida

This report presents the results of air monitoring near the South Woods Elementary school in Hastings, FL, located in an agricultural area in which cabbage and potatoes are grown close to the school. The study was conducted by two high school students for their science fair project. They found three different pesticides—the insecticides endosulfan and diazinon, and the herbicide trifluralin in most samples over the course of the eight-day sampling period from December 6 to 14 in 2006.

Yakima Valley, Washington

This report presents the results of air monitoring in the apple-growing region of Washington State, the Yakima Valley. With training and laboratory assistance from PANNA, the Farm Worker Pesticide Project (FWPP) monitored the air for chlorpyrifos and its oxon degradation product at two homes in the Yakima Valley in April of 2006. Monitoring was conducted to coincide with the spring use of chlorpyrifos as an insecticide on apples, pears and cherries for the control of coddling moth, leafroller and other pome-fruit pests.
